La Musique

Art, French, Poetry, Translation

Music

Music often takes me like a sea!
To’ard my pale star,
‘Neath a ceiling of fog or in a vast ether,
I raise the sail!

The chest forward and the lungs blown up
Like a sail-cloth,
I climb the backs of the piled up waves
That the night hides from me;

I feel, vibrating in me, all the passions
Of a ship that suffers ;
The good wind, the storm and its convulsions

On the vast abyss
Cradle me. And other times, calm flatness, great mirror
Of my despair!

Je mets à la voile;

Que la nuit me voile;

D’un vaisseau qui souffre;

Me bercent. D’autres fois, calme plat, grand miroir
De mon désespoir!
